Chang Liu, founder of The Case Room

Former McKinsey interviewer

Chang Liu

A note from the founder

“Hi, I'm Chang. I landed McKinsey, BCG & Bain offers in one cycle, then spent nearly five years on the hiring side of McKinsey interviews, so I built the coach I wish I'd had: one that learns how you think and holds you to the real bar.”

Every score is calibrated to how I actually gave feedback in real McKinsey interviews, not a generic rubric. More about me →

Exhibit 01 The Platform

It builds on what you said. Then it challenges it.

Most AI case tools work like this: you talk, you stop, you press submit, you wait for a score. That's a voice memo with a rubric attached, and nobody has ever been interviewed that way. Here the interviewer takes what you just said, builds the next question out of it, and pushes on the part that doesn't hold up. The case doesn't move on until you've got it.

Press play: a real exchange, captions and exhibits and all, ending in the detailed evaluation. No signup needed.

A couple of minutes, with sound. Headphones recommended.

Exhibit 02 Philosophy

Doing more cases isn't the same as getting better.

Most people grind through dozens of cases and plateau. Reps teach you nothing until you review, digest, and connect them. The Case Room carries your full history and turns it into coaching, so each case is more targeted than the last.

i.

It knows your strengths and weak spots

It tracks your performance across frameworks, math, synthesis, and intuition, and reads the trend, so it coaches the real you, not just today's case.

ii.

Your assessment, then a real debrief

First a clear assessment so you know exactly where you stand, then a debrief that turns it into progress: what happened, where you shone, and the concepts to shore up.

iii.

Homework and your next case, chosen for you

Targeted practice for what just happened, plus the next case picked to attack your weak spot. A real plan, not a generic browse.

Exhibit 04 1:1 Coaching

With Chang: a real person, sold separately

Prepare with someone who's been on both sides of the table.

Before a real round, nothing replaces a human who has sat in the interviewer's chair. Chang spent nearly five years as a trained McKinsey interviewer, so she knows what goes on the real scorecard, the patterns that separate a hire from a ding, and the blind spots you can't see in yourself. Pay and pick your time in one step, over Zoom.

Exhibit 05 Story

Chang Liu, founder of The Case Room

Chang Liu

Founder · Former McKinsey consultant

Kellogg MBA · McKinsey, BCG & Bain offers in one cycle · nearly 5 years interviewing at McKinsey · coached 100s of candidates.

“The candidates who do well treat the interview like a conversation, not a verbal test.”

I didn't grow up knowing what consulting was. Before my internship interviews, the only person I had to practice with was my dad, and the reason it worked was that he knew how I think.

That's the whole idea behind The Case Room. Most tools tell you the “right answer.” This coach learns how you think (where you take shortcuts, where you freeze on a curveball) and coaches that. The evaluation is calibrated to how I actually gave feedback across nearly five years of real McKinsey interviews. Read my full story →

Exhibit 06 Questions

Questions, answered.

Do I need a credit card to start?

No. You can run a full case free (live interview, evaluation, and debrief) without entering any payment details.

Do I have to speak out loud?

Yes, you talk through the case live, out loud, the way you would in a real interview. That real-time pressure is the point. No microphone handy? A typed mode is available as a fallback.

How long does one case take?

About 30–40 minutes for a full case start to finish, including your debrief. You can pause and pick it back up if you need to.

Is this only for McKinsey, or does it work for BCG and Bain too?

It works across all of them. The case types and skills are the same ones tested at McKinsey, BCG, Bain, and other top firms. The evaluation is calibrated to how Chang gave feedback in real McKinsey interviews, a bar that holds up wherever you're recruiting.

I'm new to casing. Is it beginner-friendly?

Yes. The library spans beginner to interviewer-level tricky, so you can start gentle and build up. Every case comes with a full debrief and shows you what a stronger answer sounds like.

What counts as a "new case," and are redos free?

A new case is one you've never unlocked before. On a paid plan, re-attempting a case you've already done is always free, so you can drill the same case until it clicks. The free case is a single attempt.

Do I pick the case, or is one assigned?

Both. You can browse the library and choose, or take the next case the coach recommends based on where your last performance was weakest.

What's the difference between the platform and 1:1 coaching with Chang?

The platform is self serve practice you do on your own, any time. 1:1 coaching with Chang is live human time with an ex McKinsey interviewer, sold separately, for when you want an expert to diagnose what's holding your performance back.
